Shooter Profile: Bob Self

Bob-SelfBob was born in 1952 and began shooting with black powder rifles in 1973. He competed in Muzzleloading shoots in Indiana and soon started shooting Trap. In 1993 he won his first national competition in Phoenix, AZ, earning the HOA for trap and trap doubles in black powder shotgun. Trap then transitioned to Sporting Clays which sparked a fire that fuels his passion for shotgun sports today. Bob now travels and shoots as much as possible searching for unique challenges, diverse terrain, and varying targets. The constant challenge to break all targets no matter the difficulty and the possibility of being the best each time out remains his driving force.

In 1998 Bob became a shooting instructor and gunfitter, and has grown his business into a successful livelihood allowing him to travel nationally as well as internationally. At the World FITASC tournament in 2012 a visiting team invited Bob to Thailand for sporting clay and FITASC instruction, which has become an annual event. Among his many students are the governor of Indiana and his family, radio show host and Mike Tyson prosecutor Greg Garrison, congresswoman Susan Brooks, and former Chief Economic Advisor to George Bush, Al Hubbard. Bob also hosts many shooting events including the NFL Alumni event as part of the Indianapolis Superbowl festivities.

In 2006 Bob recognized many young shooters shared his passion for Clay Target Sports, so he volunteered to coach the SCTP team, Target Busters. Working with kids has been amazingly rewarding, from teaching beginners how to break targets and developing positive and confident shooters to watching them mature in life as well. Many of the kids he began coaching at 9 or 10 years old are now collegiate shooters. His two sons have also excelled with a shotgun, including his eldest son Caesar Guerini Staff Shooter Rich Self.
